Observation

My first visit to Westerly Middle School was a very enjoyable experience. First Mrs. A introduced me to her 7th grade science class while they were working on an in class activity. They were required to read an excerpt from a science magazine and then answer some questions. Mrs. A then went over the answers with the entire class. I asked Mrs. A about her class and safety policies as well as how she organizes the class. The first week of school parents and/ or guardians must read and sign the class syllabus that says that they are aware and understand the rules and procedures of the school as well as Mrs. A's class policies which include how the grades are weighted and homework. She also explained to me that because of the NECAP tests, she and the other 7th grade science teachers have had to re-evaluate their curriculum in order to better prepare their students. She said that a lot of time in past year was spent on the scientific method, measurement and other fundamental science topics. The excess amount of time spent on this caused less time to be spent on other topics such as geology which is a main component of the NECAP.

Reflection

The visit was quite informative and relieving. My CT, Mrs. A, was so helpful and welcomed me with open arms. She made me feel at ease and relaxed. She seems to run her classes in the same manner that I would: relaxed, open lines of communication with the students, and productive. Mrs. A offers endless amounts of after-school help on Tuesdays and even makes herself available during lunch. I’m very excited to work with her and see what I can learn from
her and maybe even teach her some things.
